In a surprising shake-up in the healthcare sector, Patricia Lewis, the driving force behind sustainability at UnitedHealth Group, stepped down in December after nearly four years of dedicated service. The healthcare giant has yet to announce her successor, leaving many wondering who will take up the mantle. The silence speaks volumes.
Lewis’s departure wasn’t entirely unexpected. Back in June, she hinted at her plans to leave via LinkedIn, shortly after the unexpected resignation of former CEO Andrew Witty. Since then, she has launched her own executive consulting firm. But what does this mean for UnitedHealth? For now, the company seems to be navigating uncertain waters without a captain steering its sustainability strategy.
Ambitious Environmental Goals
Under Lewis’s leadership, UnitedHealth committed to slashing its operational and electricity-related emissions by 60% by 2030, using 2023 levels as a baseline. It’s an ambitious promise, though only 3% of reductions have been achieved so far. The ultimate goal is to reach operational carbon neutrality by 2035—a tall order.
That’s not all. The company also aims to encourage 77% of its suppliers to adopt science-based emission reduction targets by 2030. This is a significant challenge, especially since only 65% of them currently have a plan in place.
A Tough Legacy to Follow
Lewis’s legacy at UnitedHealth extends beyond mere numbers. Her experience as a human resources leader at DuPont, IBM, and Lockheed Martin shaped her vision of a company where culture, diversity, and inclusion are central. As UnitedHealth’s first Chief Sustainability Officer in February 2022, she paved the way for a more integrated approach to sustainability.
However, the path ahead is fraught with challenges. The lack of communication about her replacement casts doubt on the company’s ability to stay the course. With already ambitious sustainability goals, the question remains whether UnitedHealth can remain on track without a clearly defined leader at the helm.
So, who will step up? The company needs to fill this void quickly to avoid losing the momentum initiated by Lewis. Meanwhile, the healthcare sector watches closely.
