Apple’s Eco-Champion Lisa Jackson to Depart, Leaving a Legacy of Green Innovation

Lisa Jackson, a pivotal figure in Apple’s environmental strategy, is set to leave the tech giant at the end of January 2026. After 13 years of spearheading Apple’s ambitious eco-friendly policies, Jackson’s departure marks the end of an era. She joined Apple in 2013 after leading the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under President Obama. During her tenure, Apple slashed its emissions by over 60% through investments in renewable energy and recycled materials. CEO Tim Cook praised her as instrumental in the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Jackson’s responsibilities will be divided between Jennifer Newstead and Sabih Khan. Newstead, coming from Meta, will handle Apple’s political affairs, while Khan, the new Chief Operating Officer, will oversee environmental and social initiatives. Khan, already involved in Jackson’s green supply chain strategies, ensures strategic continuity. However, Jackson’s exit raises concerns about the representation of Black executives at Apple, a pressing issue with only 9% overall representation. Critics also highlight a perceived backslide in diversity and inclusion within the company.

A Strong Legacy, But Challenges Ahead

Jackson spearheaded key initiatives like the Racial and Equity Justice Initiative, launched in 2020 with a $100 million investment in diverse entrepreneurs and programs aimed at reducing pollution in low-income communities. Despite these achievements, her departure could slow the momentum of the diversity and inclusion programs she championed. With a reduced number of Black executives, Apple must intensify efforts to uphold and strengthen these commitments. Critics are vocal, especially as diversity policies face scrutiny across major U.S. companies.

Is Sabih Khan the Right Successor?

Sabih Khan, newly promoted to COO, has a long history with Apple, having started in the supply chain team in 1995. His deep knowledge of operations and advanced manufacturing technologies makes him an ideal candidate to continue Jackson’s work. However, he faces pressure to expand ecological and social initiatives while navigating a complex political and social landscape. With skepticism surrounding diversity, Khan must prove he can meet the high expectations of both employees and shareholders.

As this transition unfolds, Apple faces a test of resilience and long-term strategy. Jackson’s legacy is undeniable, but the path to maintaining and expanding this positive impact is fraught with challenges.
