Hollywood Studios Ditch Diesel Generators for Eco-Friendly Power Solutions

Hollywood is making a green leap forward. Major studios like Amazon, Disney, and Netflix are swapping out their noisy, polluting diesel generators for cleaner, quieter alternatives. These generators have long been a necessary evil on film sets, powering equipment but contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Now, the industry is embracing change.

Amazon Studios, through its MGM division, is leading the charge with a solar-powered network called Solar Ring, developed by GreenLite Trailers. This innovative system was tested during the filming of the second season of ‘Fallout,’ providing nearly 5,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity over 20 weeks. In the UK, Amazon is also using hydrogen technology to charge mobile batteries, further reducing reliance on diesel where solar isn’t feasible.

Green Initiatives in Entertainment

Disney and Netflix are also stepping up their environmental game. Disney reports a 38% reduction in operational emissions since 2019, though specifics are scarce. Netflix is using clean energy across its productions and has cut generator fuel use by 20% on half of its 2024 projects. These efforts not only benefit the environment but also reduce noise pollution, allowing equipment to be placed closer to sets without disturbing nearby areas.

Moreover, Amazon, Disney, and Netflix are investing in startups through programs like Amazon’s internal R&D fund and the Clean Mobile Power Initiative, supporting the development of these promising technologies.

Beyond Hollywood

While these eco-friendly solutions are currently being tested in the film industry, their potential extends far beyond. Sectors like live events, construction, disaster relief, isolated microgrids, and backup power for commercial buildings, including data centers and hospitals, could all benefit from these innovations.

Challenges remain, however. The cost and logistics of deploying these technologies are significant hurdles. Amazon has yet to disclose the full impact of the Solar Ring on ‘Fallout’s’ emissions. Disney and Netflix, despite their ambitious goals, have not provided detailed results.

Nevertheless, the commitment of these entertainment giants to greener practices is a promising sign for the future. With continued support and innovation, the industry could significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
