Tapestry, the parent company of Coach and Kate Spade, is making waves in central Illinois with an unexpected venture into community solar energy. Despite having no stores or offices in the area, Tapestry has completed three community solar projects with Pivot Energy, boasting a total capacity of 13.5 megawatts—enough to power about 2,500 homes.
In addition to these, two more installations are planned under a 15-year partnership announced in 2023, which will collectively reach 33 megawatts. While modest, this capacity is vital for Tapestry’s goal to meet 100% of its electricity needs with renewable energy by 2025.
Why Illinois?
Tapestry’s choice to invest in Illinois is no accident. The state has become a hotspot for renewable energy development, thanks to the Clean and Equitable Jobs Act passed in 2021. This legislation provides incentives for renewable energy credits (REC) and requires social equity support for new energy installations.
But there’s more to it. Tapestry is taking a portfolio approach to achieve its 100% renewable target across its offices, stores, and distribution centers.
Challenges and Future Outlook
The biggest hurdle for Tapestry remains its Scope 3 emissions, which account for 99% of its carbon footprint. By 2030, the company aims to cut these emissions by 42% from 2022 levels. Although Tapestry reported a 14% increase in Scope 3 emissions in 2025 compared to 2021, it is working to offset this pandemic-related impact.
Despite clear ambitions, the path is fraught with challenges. The cost and logistical hurdles of expanding renewable energy to its supply chain are significant. Nevertheless, Tapestry is committed to achieving 40% renewables in its supply chain by 2030, up from 12% today.
The investment in community solar is part of this strategy, enabling Tapestry to contribute to emission reductions while strengthening its local commitment.
