Susanne Stormer Takes Helm of Global Sustainability Standards Board

The world of sustainability standards is welcoming a new leader. Susanne Stormer, a former sustainability executive at Novo Nordisk and partner at PwC, has been appointed as the chair of the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB) of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Her appointment, effective April 1, 2026, signifies a pivotal moment for global sustainability standards.

Stormer succeeds Carol Adams, who held the position for three years. With her extensive experience at Novo Nordisk, where she integrated ESG disclosures into the company’s annual report, and at PwC in Denmark, she brings invaluable expertise. Her involvement in developing European sustainability standards and contributing to an international council for harmonizing disclosure frameworks underscores her commitment to effective governance.

A Rich and Committed Career

At Novo Nordisk, Stormer spent 13 years as Vice President of Corporate Sustainability, a role in which she pioneered the integration of ESG information into annual reports. This was more than a mere formality; she fundamentally transformed how the company communicated its sustainability commitments. At PwC, she continued this trajectory by representing the firm’s sustainability services.

But Stormer’s contributions extend beyond these roles. Her involvement with the International Governance Network and the OECD’s governance committee has well-prepared her for her role at the GSSB. She was also a founding member of an international council aimed at aligning disclosure frameworks, a crucial initiative for sustainability practitioners.

Challenges Ahead

While Stormer’s appointment is widely praised, the path forward is not without obstacles. The GRI, though one of the most widely used voluntary reporting tools, faces criticism for its complexity and heft. Moreover, integrating sustainability standards globally remains a significant challenge, with practices still varying widely across regions.

Stormer’s three-year mandate at the GSSB will be closely watched. Expectations are high for her to simplify and harmonize reporting practices while enhancing the impact of GRI standards. However, cultural and economic differences could slow these harmonization efforts. The challenge is substantial, but with her experience, Stormer appears well-equipped to tackle it.

In addition to her role at GRI, Stormer continues to teach at the Copenhagen Business School, strengthening the ties between academia and the private sector. With a foot in both worlds, she is well-positioned to advance the cause of corporate sustainability.
